Vitamin C

Kiwis are loaded with vitamin C. Wondering if you should take a vitamin C supplement to help boost your immunity? Let’s break it down.

Does vitamin C actually increase immune response? There has been a lot of confusion around vitamin C over the years in regards to immunity but more recent research shows that our cells actually absorb the vitamin C and use it to keep white blood cells healthy in order to kill viruses and bacteria.

Am I getting enough? Vitamin C is found in most fruits and vegetables as well as multivitamins, so if you regularly consume them, you’re probably getting enough. If your diet lacks fruits and veggies, you can supplement with vitamin C supplements prophylactically to prevent and treat respiratory and various other infections. Sounds good right about now.

Which foods are naturally high in Vitamin C? Foods rich in vitamin C include broccoli, cantaloupe, cauliflower, kale, kiwi, orange juice, papaya, red, green or yellow pepper, sweet potato, strawberries, and tomatoes.

Anything else? Taking supplements on an empty stomach can make you feel nauseous so be sure to take them after meals.  Vitamin C also helps with the absorption of iron. So next time you’re eating meat (high in iron), squeeze a little lemon on your broccoli (high in Vitamin C) to maximize the health benefits of your meal.
