Sunshine Vitamin D

The sunshine soothing my soul this weekend reminds me of vitamin D and why we need it. With April showers and shelter in place, it’s been a struggle for all of us to get enough of this essential vitamin into our bodies. One of the best ways that we can absorb vitamin D is through unfiltered sun exposure on our skin. Your skin contains a certain type of cholesterol that once exposed to the radiation of the sun it is converted into vitamin D. The Recommended Dietary Allowance for adults 19 years and older is 600 IU daily for men and women and for adults over 70 it is 800 IU daily.⁣

Here’s why this "sunshine vitamin" is essential for our bodies:⁣

-Increases absorption of calcium and phosphorous (necessary for strong bones and teeth)⁣
-Promotes a healthy nervous system⁣
-Supports immune system⁣
-Helps regulation of hormones⁣
-Supports gut health⁣

Sources of Vitamin D:⁣
-Vitamin D2: Found in plant based foods such as mushrooms, fortified foods such as milk alternatives, tofu, and bran cereals⁣
-Vitamin D3: Found in animal based foods such as egg yolks, fatty fish, whole milk, tuna, and oysters⁣

Deficiency Symptoms include:⁣
-Depression⁣
-Anxiety⁣
-Fatigue⁣
-Weak bones⁣
-irregular periods⁣
-Insomnia⁣

There is a whole lot more about Vitamin D to discuss. if you are curious as to whether or not a supplement may be appropriate for you or a loved one during this intense time of being indoors, DM so we can find some time to chat. ⁣
